25 Jun. 2025 Dr Byron Wade Historic Woodland Cemetery Jun. 25, 2025 Dr Byron, a retired AF Colonel, had a distinguished career in the Dental Corps as a periodontist. Founded in 1841, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum is one of the nation’s oldest rural garden cemeteries. Its natural setting was a dramatic departure from traditional church burial grounds at the time. The cemetary provides a unique insight to some of Dayton's most interesting history.

At one time Dayton was known as the city of a Thousand Factories. James Ritty’s invention of the cash register led to NCR. Kettering’s automobile self-starter led to Delco. Thomas Midgley’s leaded gasoline led to Ethyl Corporation. And the Wright Brothers’ airplane…well that led to nearly everything else. Many creative minds from Dayton shaped the world we live in today.

20 Aug. 2025 Dr Dorian Borbononus, History Professor, UD Life and Death in Ancient Rome Aug. 20, 2025 The impressive monuments of the ancient Roman Empire are world famous. Structures like the Colosseum or the Pantheon reflect the priorities of Roman emperors, but what about the other inhabitants of Rome? Much of the evidence for the lives of typical Romans ironically stems from the way that they were buried because funerary rituals and burial sites offer clues about the social aspirations and limitations that affected the lives of Romans from all walks of life. This lecture explores the connection between burial and society through a series of archaeological sites and objects which illustrate the Roman response to the universal human experience of bereavement.
